Ilex verticillata

Ilex verticillata ‘Sparkleberry’, common name Winterberry, is known for its bright red berries that last throughout winter. The berries are an important food source for migrating and native birds. This native shrub can be found naturalized on the edges of wetlands and will perform well in any good garden soil. ‘Sparkleberry’ fruits best in full sun but will tolerate light shade. The female cultivar needs a male pollinator to produce the attractive berries. One male plant can pollinate up to 10 female shrubs.
